“SPEAK SOFTLY, CARRY A BIG STICK, AND YOU WILL GO FAR.”
Do you know where the name for the teddy bear came from? In July of 1902 the United States won a short, but meaningful war with Spain, they were fighting for the independence of Cuba. Two American heroes came out of this war. Dewey and Theodor Roosevelt. Our president at the time McKinley was running for a second term, and smart as he was he knew that if he hired Roosevelt as his vice president he was sure to win. Roosevelt had a way with words, making it easy for him to win the election. In the fall of 1901 our president McKinley was shot, a person that attended the event, where they were allowed to come and shake the president’s hand, had a gun strapped to his hand and when he went to shake the hand of the president he shot him. Making him the 3rd president to be assassinated while in office. Instead of mourning the death of our president most Americans were happy because Roosevelt was now our president. He was the first to transform the presidency. In between all his accomplishments, he is credited for the Panama canal, and he’s the reason why we have National Forests, Forest Rangers and, Wild Animal Service. In November 1902 he was out hunting in Mississippi and he had no luck, when one of the attendants called him back they had an American Black Bear tied up to a tree and they offered him to shoot it. He refused to; he said it was “unsportsmanlike” and walked away. They published a cartoon about this in the newspaper, and someone send the president the request to name the bear after him. He agreed, but even though he agreed, no one dared call him Teddy to his face. I guess everybody thought he would be insulted. I don’t know about you but I would be honored if they decided to name a stuffed animal after me.

So we got our new camera Nikon D90, We were feeling naked not being able to do our usual photoshoots for Vendetta. The wait was worth it although we feel like not having pictures for the past month was part of what made us feel like we weren’t being active enough. Enough said to make up for I went picture wild at the Urban Kings office.

Fun fact with some history for you, who was the Babe Ruth chocolate named after? I bet the first thing that pops into your mind is Babe Ruth, the baseball player, but you’re wrong. In 1884 Grover Cleveland was the first democratic president since the Civil War. It was a tough election because his opponent decided to bring out the skeletons from the closet and let the public know he had fathered a child out of wedlock. I know, who cares right? But believe it or not, this was a bit of a big deal back in that time. It actually still is to some people now days. Presidents are supposed to be perfect, or at least appear to be, so it must’ve been pretty tough for him to win the election. He was probably that good to win over the people. Anyway, he was also the first, and only president to get married in the white house. How weird is that? isn’t every president like old and married? Well I guess he was the exception. His wife was 21 years old, and he was 49 at the time. He went on to have 5 children with this woman, whom he staid married to for the rest of his life by the way. Many people thought otherwise because of the age difference but I guess they were all wrong. Their first child, who was born in the white house, was named Ruth. Now do you see where I’m trying to get at? Yes, the candy companies figured they could make some good amount of money by using baby Ruth’s name for one of their chocolates. After all he was a good president during his first term, and the people were sure to support the president. Hey, they were right, to this day the chocolate is still around.
